This retreat is designed to give vowed  religious under 40 space and time to probe their sources of hope and meaning, to contemplate individually and together that which gives their commitment joy and passion. Each day the retreatants will explore a different theme through a movie and discussion.
There will be times of communal and personal contemplation.

Retreat Directors: Julie Christensen, CSJ, is a Sister of St. Joseph of  Concordia.  She serves on the staff of Manna House of Prayer as the Youth and Young Adult Minister. Her educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in Theatre from Kansas State University and a graduate certificate in Conflict Resolution. Currently, Julie is working toward a master’s degree in Christian Spirituality from Creighton University.

Janet Lander, CSJ, a Sister of St. Joseph of Concordia, has worked as an educator and missionary.  She holds a master’s degree in Education from Mount St. Mary’s in Los Angeles and in Pastoral Ministry from Boston College, where she also completed the Certificate in Practice of Spirituality.  She serves on the staff of Manna House of Prayer as a spiritual director, facilitator and retreat presenter.

Description:

JUNE 20-24: Quilters can find time and space to spend quality time quilting in a relaxed and enjoyable place is the benefit of coming to Manna House for a weekend. Sister Betty Suther, an experienced quilter herself, is your hostess and along with both experienced quilters and those learning to quilt we learn new techniques as we produce a new project or work on an unfinished one. You will need your own sewing machine and your own materials.

The marathon begins with supper at 5:30 on Wednesday, June 20,  and concludes after dinner at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 24.

This retreat is designed to give individuals an experience of the practice of making bobbin lace in a contemplative setting. Lacemaking, as contemplative practice, creates in us heart-space where our communion with God and neighbor without distinction may be woven in our lives, as surely as the design of threads and spaces unfolds at our fingertips. We are healed as we encounter beauty, on our lace pillow, in our lives and in our spirits. No previous experience in lacemaking is required.

Presenters: Janet Lander, CSJ, a Sister of St. Joseph of Concordia, has worked as an educator and missionary.  She holds a master’s degree in Education from Mount St. Mary’s in Los Angeles and in Pastoral Ministry from Boston College, where she also completed the Certificate in Practice of Spirituality.
She serves on the staff of Manna House of Prayer as a spiritual director, facilitator, and retreat presenter.  She is also an artist and took up the art of bobbin lace more than seven years ago.

Ramona Medina, CSJ, is a Sister of St. Joseph of Concordia.  She holds a degree in education from Mount St. Scholastica College in Atchinson, Kan., and another in occupational therapy from the University of Kansas, Lawrence.  She ministered as a teacher and as an occupational therapist.  After finishing service on her congregation’s leadership team, she helped open Neighbor to Neighbor, a center in downtown Concordia that serves women and children in need.  She experiences the art of making bobbin lace as a contemplative prayer form.  Ramona has been teaching bobbin lacemaking for more than eight years.

COST: $490 plus materials

Each of these programs can also be offered as an “Elder Retreat,” a three-day format specifically designed for assisted care facilities of retirement centers for religious communities. Depending on the needs of the participants, the retreat
may include pastoral visits, morning and/or evening prayer and reflection guides.

The healing and supportive environment at Manna House of Prayer can provide for you nourishment both for body and soul. Settle into a contemplative space, rich with both solitude and the opportunity for serious conversation as desired. Enjoy the hospitality of a community of Sisters, a leisurely paced rural environment, ample time for personal rest, nutritious home cooked meals, a spiritual library and the availability of daily liturgy. Come for a week, a month, or as long as you need.

Basic fees (which include three meals per day, swimming, exercise equipment, wireless internet and a computer room, and use of the grounds and living areas of the house):

• $60 per day (for up to 6 days)
• $385 per week (for less than a month)
• $50 per day for over a month.

Other services are also available for additional costs (i.e., Spiritual Direction, Dream Work, Yoga, directed retreat).

Betty Suther, CSJ | Administrator holds master’s degrees in both Administration (Kansas State University) and Christian Spirituality (Creighton University, Omaha). Betty is a certified and experienced spiritual director and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) consultant. She is a quilting artist and facilitates retreats and workshops for beginners and experienced quilters.

Bette Moslander, CSJ | Program Director holds a doctorate in Theology (St. Mary’s Notre Dame). As past president of Sisters of St. Joseph of Concordia and of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, Bette has long experience in consultation with religious communities of women. She facilitates workshops and retreats and is an experienced Spiritual Director.

Marcia Allen, CSJ | Facilitator holds a bachelor’s degree in History and French and a master’s in Administration (Kansas State University), and a doctorate in Ministry in Spirituality (Graduate Theological Foundation). Liberata “Liebe” Pellerin , CSJ | Facilitator received a master’s degree in Religious Studies (Catholic University of America). Liberata received her certificate from the year’s study in spiritual direction from the Jesuit School of Theology-Berkeley. She has been supervisor for Spiritual Directors studying at Creighton University and is a Spiritual Director at Manna House.

Carolyn Teter, CSJ | Staff holds a doctorate in Religious Studies (St. Mary’s-Notre Dame). She taught at Marymount College in Salina, Kan., for many years. Carolyn also has a master’s degree in Addiction Counseling (North Dakota State University).
