Description:

This retreat is designed to give individuals an experience of making bobbin lace in a contemplative setting. No previous experience in lacemaking is required.  We will also gather daily for communal prayer. Together we will ponder how the contemplative practice of lacemaking fosters a life shaped by beauty and devotion, by creativity and presence, and by sustainability, service and compassion, as surely in the present century as it did centuries ago in France. What grace that God invites us to be partners in the weaving of God’s design!

Presenters:

Sister Janet Lander, a Sister of St. Joseph of Concordia, has worked as an educator and missionary.  She holds a master’s degree in education from Mount St. Mary’s in Los Angeles and in Pastoral Ministry from Boston College, where she also completed the Certificate in Practice of Spirituality.  She serves on the staff of Manna House of Prayer as a spiritual director, facilitator and retreat presenter.  She is also an artist and took up the art of bobbin lace more than eight years ago.

Ramona Medina is a Sister of St. Joseph of Concordia.  She holds a degree in education from Mount St. Scholastica, Atchinson, and another in occupational therapy from the University of Kansas, Lawrence.  She ministered as a teacher and as an occupational therapist.  After finishing service on her Congregation’s leadership team, she helped open Neighbor to Neighbor, serving women and children in need.  She experiences the art of making bobbin lace as a contemplative prayer form.  Ramona has been teaching Bobbin Lace for more than nine years.

The Divine Artist is at work in all creation, moment by moment, from the beginning and always. The Divine Artist is at work in each of us, and in every aspect of our lives, the world, every relationship.  We participate in this divine unfolding of Love, laboring in our world, creating with our hands and voices, minds and hearts.

This retreat will be an exploration and celebration of our call to create in and with the Divine Artist.  Using various modes of creative expression — musical, artistic, poetic and physical movement — the retreatant will be invited to partner the unfolding of God’s work of art in her life and contemplate the Divine Artist at work.

Directors: Janet Lander, CSJ, is a Sister of St. Joseph of Concordia. She holds master’s degrees in Education and Pastoral Ministry, and a Certificate in Practice of Spirituality.  She serves on the staff of Manna House of Prayer as a spiritual director, facilitator and retreat presenter.  She is also a poet and artist in her leisure time, enjoying photography, bobbin lace, calligraphy and a variety of crafts.

Dian Hall, CSJ, is a novice with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Concordia, but no novice in the arts!  She has been a pastoral musician in Protestant and Catholic churches for 41 years.  She holds a master’s degree in Education and worked for 12 years as an art teacher in public schools.  Dian is interested in music and art as physical and emotional healing tools.

PROGRAM: This new “Bearers” program begins with a six-day study-experience deigned to give you a better understanding of the Sisters of St. Joseph charism and mission as they relate to a mystical tradition in an evolutionary cosmos. We will help you more effectively enter into the Christic work of God’s design today. COST: $800 covers registration, housing and all meals.

RETREAT: An optional six-day retreat will give you the opportunity to reflect on the study-experience and all you’ve gained from it. COST: $500 covers registration, housing and all meals.

COMBINED PROGRAM AND RETREAT: The 12-day experience includes the new program with Sisters Marcia and Janet, plus the time needed to reflect on the experience. COST: $1,200 covers registration, housing and all meals.
